Default 316 error on TEJTii-c1501

My machine was sewing along fine. On a color change, the presser foot went down and gave me a 316 error. I've gotten this error before when sewing 3D caps or in high density thread areas. I usually do a thread trim, shut the machine off and turn it back on. The error clears, I move a little past the dense area and sew on...

This time, there was no high density thread area. It just stopped. I tried to do a thread trim... 316. I turned the machine off and on again. Tried to do a thread trim... 316. I tried turning the main shaft knob and it won't budge. The presser foot is in the down position, so the hoop is trapped, short of removing the presser foot.

I'm afraid either the main shaft motor of the main shaft card is shot, or both, but don't know how to tell what's shot, but I see shelling out some big buck in my future. At Sew Many Parts (the only place I can find the motor), it's $1,200. The motor is on both SMP and Hirsch websites at $385 ish. Hoping it's just the card, but with my luck, it will be both.

Anyone know a trick to get the presser foot to come up so I can get my hoop out? I have another single head and a 4 head so not totally dead in the water but I'd like to have that hoop out.

Thanks,
Alisa

Correction...
when I've gotten this error message before, I remove the needle, then do a thread trim...

This time on a thread trim, it doesn't even try to trim. It just flashes the 316 error code again.

Question...
Could a broken needle tip, jammed up in the needle holder cause this?

With the machine off, I pull the pantogram back and forward to unhoop the sample piece that was hooped. I then tried to remove the needle. It wouldn't come out. I had to take a pair of needle nose plier to pull it out. When I did, a needle tip fell out with it. After that, I noticed that I could pull the presser foot further down and push it up. I turned the machine back on and did a thread trim. No 316 error. I removed the bobbin and pressed start. It started sewing, though stopped after 4 or 5 stitches, giving me a thread break error. But it tried to sew, so I'm wondering if that piece of stuck needle tip was jamming the presser foot which was jamming the main shaft, which was jamming the motor....

Opinions?

Thanks,
Alisa
