Laser malfunctioning… help!!

My mother was operating our Universal Laser and allowed the hood to fall closed. It closed with a big jolt and now the laser is not cutting properly. We get an error message saying that the file exceeds the size of the cutting bed. Files will begin to cut but are in the wrong position and then inexplicably some of the vectors do not cut at all. We are just sick. After some study of the way the thing is behaving, my brother thinks the z sensor may not be functioning. Any ideas? Any experience with this? Any idea how long it will take us to get back up and running? We have orders to fill and this is not good. I put a call in to the gal who sold us the laser but don’t know when we will hear back from her.

I’d doubt it’s the Z axis, but it might be one of the others have lost there home switch. When your laser powers up, does it appear to perform the proper home sequence? If you’re running a parallel cable, check it. Weird things happen when they half unplug.

Home sequence performs properly. It initializes and displays the file. I think the problem is that mom just can’t get it zeroed out. My brother is out of town and can’t help her…

Have you tried to shut the laser off and let it sit for a few minutes and then reboot the entire operating system? Not sure if this will help but worth the try.

Don’t you have some kind of service agreement with Universal?

Just another idea for you to look at. Perhaps there’s nothing wrong with the laser itself, but one of the configuration settings in your software has been accidentally changed. We have several people at my work who operate our laser, sometimes when things go funny and don’t line up anymore it’s because someone has been fiddling with the settings in the software and changed the page size so it’s different to the laser bed size.

This is exactly what seems to have happened! A strange coincidence that the problem happened right after the cover fell… I suppose mother accidentally changed a setting! My brother was able to set it right. WHEW! I was afraid we were going to be down for some time and we are all relieved. THANKS EVERYONE!
