Hello, my name is Donald and I’m kind of a noob to the whole screen printing process. I’ve got a laser printer and I use vellum paper. I was told to preshrink the paper for best results. Is there truth in this? As I said I’m kind of new so I do lots of experimenting, but I don’t think I’ve got enough experience yet to know or tell the difference in quality. Also, do I need longer exposure time when making screens?
Hi Donald, yes, that is true. What happens is the vellum paper shrinks when it goes through the hot fusing roller of the printer. This shrinkage may cause multi-color seperations to not lineup as desired. What you can do to solve this problem is to print the paper as a totally blank page on your laser printer to pre-shrink it. You can also use you conveyor dryer/flash heater. Then go ahead and print the design as you normally would.
To your second question, yes. This is because vellum paper is not completely transparent and therefore it may a need longer exposure time.
