Default free digitizing software

Hi
I am interested in buying either a Janome 350 or a Elna 680 digital sewing machine but have heard you can download free digitizing software from the internet instead of buying it.
I work in photoshop and illustrator and want to import my own designs to embroider.
Has anyone done this, is it a good idea and can you recommend a package?
any help would be brilliant.
thanks

I think Janome has a digitizer disc, not sure how you would buy it. I bought my Janome 350e used and the lady gave me a disc with it. TBH, I haven't tried it yet but plan to if I get more experience. I like the machine so far tho, and I get a lot of my designs on Annthegram.com

Talking Re: free digitizing software

i know wilcom offers truesizer for free, and there are several other low cost digitizing software options...but don't expect much. even with auto digitizing, there is a LOT to learn to come out with a decent design. stitch length, densities for different types of stitches and different widths of satin stitches, compensating for push and pull on flats, then differently on caps, pathing, etc. if you're serious about learning digitizing, a freebie software may be a good place to start...just don't be disappointed when the design come out looking like you want it to. it took me probably a couple of years of trial and error and error and error to figure it out!

Embird is a free digitizing software. I have used it before and it isn't terrible for free software.

As far as auto digitizing goes, unless you know what you are doing and have a program capable of doing it, it isn't as AUTOMATIC as you are probably thinking. The older software especially will create incorrect elements and you usually end up with a overly dense, sloppy design. Simple one color logos are not usually a problem but if you get in excess of 2 colors, be prepared to do some editing. I find it is easier to re-create than try to rationalize why the computer did what it did and fixing it.

If you use AI think of this of as a Live Trace versus the result of you doing the vector work yourself. Always a much cleaner result.

Try and buy old software maybe? I used DesignShop Pro+ 3 at my old job, and it was more than capable to do what you are asking.

Still for customers that are other businesses, send their logo out unless you can digitize.

I use Melco personally and just purchased DS Pro+ 10 for my shop.
