I think you will find that each system has its place...
Screen Printing is best used for larger orders or simple (one or two color) designs in smaller quantities.
DTG is almost essential if you want to have many colors on smaller orders.
Heat Press is largely being replaced by the DTG market

However, I have also found that it is difficult to be competetive AND make money on 3+ color designs while still using a manual press. So if screen printing is going to be your choice, you'd be better off knowing the kind of orders that you can turn a decent profit on and which you farm out to larger automatic shops. You make less money on the single job but (ideally) have freed up time to either score more orders or print the simpler jobs you have in queue. When you are farming out enough work to justify the upgrade to an automatic shop, then you will be ready to start hiring workers and making real money.

Either way, it all depends on the market you are going for and what kind of business you want to run.
