How do I embroider on sweaters?

Hello:

I'm new to this forum and to the embroidery business. I tried to embroider a name on a sweater the other day and it came out horrible. It was illegible and it looked as if the stitching went in too deep in the fabric. Can someone please help me figure out what I did wrong? I use a Melco EMT10T and the EDSIV software. I did use backing and 1 sheet of solvy topping.

well ... First of all ... Define Sweater, it could be a million things. . Are we talking a soft cashmere type? or a full on knit wool?

If you are trying to embroider on something with not enough fabric, that is your reason, I am going to assume that this is a knit of some kind? Try doubling up on stabilizer, use a good hefty sheet of dissolving badgemaster on it instead of the solvy.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. It's a cardigan, heavy acrylic (standard issue school uniform sweater). The program has a Fabric Adjust and lets you choose between a light knit, medium knit, heavy knit, woven. I'm just not sure which category it would fall into. Since we are just starting this business we are trying to stick to Polo shirts and school sweaters.
