It can be caused by numerous things, but usually it is an indiation that the machine is not detected as being in its correct start position.
Basically there will be a 'position coder' on the main shaft and other detectors at various points which will keep track of where the machine is so it can time pantograph movement, jump stitches, trims, etc.
Such an error could be just a one off as the machine hasn't stopped where it should have, but otherwise it could be that one or more detectors are failing or have done.
Ususally there is a reset sequence which should be tried first. If that doesn't fix it then it will need servicing.
