Default New Embroiderer Help

Hello All,

I am restarting my embroidery business and I need your help. I just got an order for 28 Jerzeees Dri-POWER Sweatshirts and need to know what needle and backing to use since I am out of practice and have not sewn on this type of under armor sweathirt type material before.

Thanks,
Crystal Olson

We generally use a multi-purpose needle 75/11 for most embroidery so as to not have to interupt production so much. Backing depends on how much stability you feel you will need for the embroidery as well as the garment life. I personally don't like to leave too much material in the garment after the application but on thinner garments I may use two layers of cutaway if I feel it may pucker. Of course your tensions are critical to any good piece of work as well as hooping snuggly with no wrinkling inside the hoop. Typically I like to use one layer of cutaway and one layer of tearaway, that way you have two layers for sewing stability but only leave one behind.
I'm not sure what you have in front of you but you say sweatshirt meaning to me fleece. I would use one each cutaway and tearaway, if you have micro-fleece you might use a 70/10 needle to penetrate the smaller knit. I am not a big fan of the plastic apparel such as dri-fit or so called, 'moisture-wicking', I am a die hard 100% cotton fan.
I hope I helped a little, most certainly do not mean to sound like a know-it-all.
Good luck, I'm sure you'll do fine, Mark
