Default Supertwist thread keeps birdnesting, HELP!

I use a Barudan embroidery machine Model: BEVY-Z1504C SN: 410632L07, and I am sewing out and order that uses Madeira's supertwist thread. My machine keeps birdnesting and I can't seem to make it sew out well at all! I am sewing out fleece headbands and caps. I have tried adjusting the top tension, changing the needle size, and slowing the stitch speed down. I made sure I am hooping the material tightly, and have tried using two tear away backings on the back, and a water soluble on the top, but so far nothing has worked. Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong?? Thanks!

I hate embroidering with metallic thread. My experience has been to crank up the top tension & run the machine a bit slower. You will probably have better luck using cutaway backing, but most customers want tearaway on headbands. Madeira should have also included a net to go over cone of thread while sewing. The net also helps to create more upper tension.

All that being said, I would just crank down the top tension & it will probably solve the bird nesting.

Is the same thing happening on all the heads?

Have you tried to change the cone?

This may sound too time consuming.. but on fleece? We would use regular thread in a similar color for each part's underlay.. then ONLY use the supertwist on the top layer only... we also spray silicone ON the cones periodically.. that helps.. and you really have to watch your needles and change them out at any sign of burrs. Other than that it is simple...lol.

Thanks for all the responses. I tried switching heads, changing to a bigger needle, adjusting the top tension, and also sewing underneath with a different type of thread, but I am still having major birdnesting issues! Any other thoughts??

Thanks so much!

Madeira also recommends using a 90/14 needle for Supertwist #30 and 100/16 needle for Supertwist #12.

Have you tried tightening the take up spring slightly?

Are you certain that the timing of the hook is on and the finger for the hook basket is centered on the needle?

Needle depth adjusted correctly?
