I have tried adjusting the top tension, changing the needle size, and slowing the stitch speed down. I made sure I am hooping the material tightly, and have tried using two tear away backings on the back, and a water soluble on the top, but so far nothing has worked. Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong?? Thanks!

I hate embroidering with metallic thread. My experience has been to crank up the top tension & run the machine a bit slower. You will probably have better luck using cutaway backing, but most customers want tearaway on headbands. Madeira should have also included a net to go over cone of thread while sewing. The net also helps to create more upper tension.
All that being said, I would just crank down the top tension & it will probably solve the bird nesting.
