T-shirts & stabilizers
I have been asked to do some embroidery on T-shirts. They are going to be heavy designs, ie, footy badges. Not ideal on T-shirts I know, but it's what the customers want. I have found the heaviest T-shirt I can. I would imagine that cutaway stabilizer would be better than tearaway, however, I find it can be scratchy if next to the skin. So, my question is, would maybe 3 or 4 layers of tearaway work? Would appreciate some advice on what you all use. Thanks in advance.

use sticky paper (paper that comes under the design, I don't know how r u calling it) and paste it under

If it were me I would used cut away. You are going to get a real puckery design if you use tear away. I know they are a little itchy but the design is going to sew better.

Thanks for advice. I experimented using the backing on top of the t-shirt with tearaway underneath.....it puckered in the middle, maybe if the stitching started in the middle it might have been ok so will try that. Will also get some cutaway to try that and compare. Maybe in time with washing, the cutaway will lose it's scratch. Anyway, good job I've got loads of old t-shirts to experiment on! Yeah that is one thing about embroidery, you have to experiment, experiment, experiment!

You need cutaway because tearaway won't help support the embroidery when the T is being washed. Some cutaways are soft. I use C29 from Emblematic. It is a 3.25 oz super soft heavy duty cutaway.

Have just managed to get hold of some super strong cutaway which is suprisingly soft. Stitched out great. Will be using that from now on! I looked for Emblematic site but couldn't find any backing on it. Would you mind giving me web address please. Am in UK and my local shop stocks Gutermann Sulky Super Strong which I've just used so would be interested in price difference. I do quite a few footy badges so this backing will be ideal for making sew on patches too. Am so grateful for the advice and just wish I'd used cutaway before! I guess it's probably better to use this on polo shirts too. Thanks again for help. mino
