Default Thread not trimming properly

I have two questions about the machine not trimming thread properly:

1) One head on the machine trims the thread, but it doesn't trim it clean right up to the fabric, so there is about an inch of excess thread after the trim. What is causing this? Also, when I remove a garment from the machine, the bobbin isn't trimmed. Are these two problems related?

2) I don't know the name of the parts, but there is one head that doesn't seem to be trimming at all. There is a little blade that is supposed to trim from underneath, and I don't believe it is moving or engaging, and therefore isn't trimming the thread. When the arm comes down from behind the needle, it doesn't grab the thread but I think it is because the blade isn't working as it should. Can I fix this somehow?

Thanks!

What kind of machine do you have? Without seeing it, it sounds like your knife needs to be adjusted.

When you take off the cover plate that the needle goes though is there some resistance?

If so the trimmer may be binding. I've had this come up and it was not cutting the thread and breaking needles. Behind the machine there is a plate at the end of the cylinder arm held by two allen head screws. If you remove them that black arm is the thread cut mechanism. There is a allen head bolt that you loosen to move the position of the arm. I center the arm freely between the hole in the cover plate making sure the thread cut blade is centered as well. It worked for me.

If it's still not cutting you might need to replace the blades on the cutter.

One more question...what if there is only one color/needle that is not trimming properly on a given head, but all the other needles trim just fine? Is that an issue with the needle placement instead of the blade itself?

Try a know color that trims on the machine in the place of that needle. Maybe the thread is more fine? You might clean the underside of the plate and make sure the screws on the cutter are tight. I'd replace both blades and try that as well.
