I would honestly recommend contacting one of the embroidery manufacturers offices near you and see what they recommend. When I was shopping for embroidery machines I asked both companies where they recommend getting supplies. Both were helpful in giving me some places. I eventually asked another of the local embroiderers who they used and opened an account with them instead.

I recommend local. If you can have your supplies a one day ship away it will help out sooner or later. My supplier is about 1.5 hours away. If I was in a BAD pinch, I could run up and get stuff. But being close to me is a BIG plus.

I like the quality of Madeira poly and their PA warehouse is a one day ship for me although I think their shipping/handling fees are high. I try to order at least $50.00 of supplies to avoid the highest handling charge. One way to save on thread costs is to limit your color palette. Of course that isn't always possible but in looking at my collection there are a number of shades that I don't really need such as certain yellows and oranges. When I started I spent too much money on spools that are rarely used, cost a lot to ship due to multiple shipments and take up space. In retrospect it would have been more cost-effective to have purchased a basic selection of cones.

I love Isacord 40 from www.amannusa.com It comes on both a 1,000m minispool (which is great for all the colors you don't use that often), and a 5,000m king spool. It is a durable poly that does not bleed even in heavy duty commercial washings. I have had polys that did.
