I just wish I could find a couple that needed to work. Ones that want to work are ok but I think if you need to work you tend to be a better emlpoyee.

I had to look to see if this wasn't my post.

My guy just messed up COUNTLESS times on a couple of recent orders. Over 25% screw ups!!

*sigh*

He just quit school and I had a talk with him and I spoke with him about where he wants to be. If he isn't going to college then min wage isn't going to cut it. But neither is his performance. I explained to him he needs to start looking at this like it is HIS business and that "ok" work isn't good enough. It has to be GREAT work.

Then the next day some OK, work goes across the table. *sigh* He does need glasses though and I'm about to require him to get his eyes right... not exactly something that can be taken lightly in our line of work.

I'm pretty anal when it comes to the quality of output at our store. When I go to buy something I want it to be free from defects. I work hard for my money and want my moneys worth when I spend it. I don't expect anyone who buys from me to settle for anything less than I would. I've only got two part time employees. Both have their strenghts and weaknesses. The one that prints does ok but has her moments. The other does art work and does pretty well but has some issues as well. Both are female. Does anyone here have both male and female printing? Which is better?

so will you plan on giving them bonuses this year?

It took me years to learn that employees are just people too.. not robots, and as such we all make mistakes and sometimes go through stuff in our lives that lend to more mistakes at work, but in general most are good and care about what they do I think. So I have learned that a pat on the back works much better every once in a while than a slap on the wrist every day they mess up.

I'll more than likely give our printer something. She's been with us almost a year. The other one has only been with us a couple of months.
I understand you on the not robots comment. I just try not to let the little things bother me. When a mistake is made I'll explain to her how it happened and then work with her to see what we can do to make sure it doesn't happen again. I can't preach attention to detail enough though.

ok, so the general consensus is $1.00 cash and a frozen turkey? cool, I can handle that. Maybe a small bag of Oranges if the mood is particularly scroogeless.?

One company I worked at gave us a $100 bonus which they took taxes out of and then proceeded to try and tell us that we should give the money to charity or something....

My most memorable gift from an employer was an embroidered shirt with money in the pocket and two bottles of wine. It meant more than just the money because so much thought was put into it and each of us got a thank you card. The owner was an amazing business man and to this day I look to things he did to help shape my own business. It was my first job out of college and to this day I remember that gift.

ha, an employer who obviously WANTED you to drink on the job! and I would have probably not found the money in the pocket and washed the shirt and given it to goodwill...
