Laser image inside crystal, plastic

I saw some examples of photographs lasered in crystal and plastic. The image was not surface work but a 2D image in the middle of the crystal.

Anyone knows how this is done? Can a CO2 laser do this? If so any specific spec? Any assistance will be appreciated.

The way I heard it is that the machine is $100,000 plus and that it uses two beams. The bubble that you see as art appears where the two beams intersect. Pure hearsay…but sounds plausible.

Two beams opposing each other collide inside the material causing a reaction, depending on the strength of each beams tells it where to meet in the middle. They are very expensive and mainly in use in Asia per my Laser Rep. They told me to save my money as I could not compete with the Asian market selling those little cubes for a dollar.

Thank you for your responses. Still a little gray on the machine and will continue researching.
