Unfortunately, the tape you can get at your local hardware and big box stores doesn't really work all that well and I certainly prefer a 3" tape instead of the 2" that most retail stores carry. I know you don't want online but it's really the best option, as well as the cheapest. J&J Supply in the far northwest, I think Washington, carries a 3", rubber based adhesive tape for around 4.50 a roll, 110 yards. I think it's made by Intertape but I'm not 100% on that. I get mine from a local tape supplier and she has to special order it and it typically takes 5-7 business days to get it, but it's worth every penny and additional time it takes to get it in.
The tape at lowes and home depot will work in a pinch, but often times they don't adhere strong enough, and then they'll leave lots of residue behind. It's been years since I've tried any tape from a retail store, so maybe someone else will have some good news for your search.
