While I see your point how do you account for heavy items that pull the hoops down? Barudan even suggests that you use clamps if the item is light to put weight down on the hoop so it doesn't flag.
I worked on industrial machines for 20 years before I got into embroidery. Some of this was on juki tsc441 that I modded to stitch 1" thick leather. I've never seen a problem with gap on the lower end. It was always the timing or the plate adjustment that caused the problem. Since the plates aren't adjustable on embroidery machines I don't see how the gap would be affected. The machines simply go up and down with no compound or unison feed. The take up spring pull the final stitch up and that is where I have seen issues because it is out of adjustment on embroidery type machines.
