Getting my own laser setup

I have been farming out laser work to a local guy who has a Universal M300 for about three years. Now I’m thinking of taking the plunge and getting my own setup.

I just took delivery of a laserpro explorer this week so I’m also a new guy. Real soon now I’ll have me web site up. There are just so many details to opening a new business.

Good luck finding much information on the web. The engraving business seems to be a very closed business. The forums are pathetic (no offense to whomever runs this one). Worse yet is folks are charging for blanks. It’s so bad that laserpro wouldn’t even release the command reference manual! (FYI, its just HPGL with a raster command added).

Today I was playing with oak parkay flooring. If you haven’t already tried it. Cover the wood with a clear coat and engrave off the clear then paint the piece with wood stain and wipe off the excess. The clear will act as a resist to the stain. I’m getting some decent halftones using this technique. It will also allow me to run the laser faster since I’m only buring off the clear then depend on the stain to penetrate the wood. Tomorrow I’m going to try to do a photo mural in flooring.
